My first Tutorial (documented)

As promised, I want to stop just "watching" tutorials and start "doing" tutorials. My first trial is @khartbeats from YouTube. Please give her a like and subscribe.

Hello ("TBD" cringe nickname for my followers, if any ever). For the very first followed tutorial I am going to start with K. Hart, since I love how she explains the tutorials, from clear instructions to even sound design. Take a look at her channel and try to replicate this or any of the tutorials available. Not too long, not too complicated.

As an super extra ultra special incentive, there is inspiration on John Carpenter horror movie "The Thing" so more motivation to follow along.

High Level Data:

DAW: Ableton 12 / Speed: 97bpm / Key: F#Min

Key learnings/Flow:

  • Take advantage of global scale feature.

  • Took me a while to figure out, but for the kick MIDI channel utilizes a "Drum Sampler" instrument.

  • Do not waste too much time trying to get exactly the same sound. Sometime stock samples are used, other time use the closest, do not go into the rabbit hole of selecting the perfect sample, just pick the best out of a handful of trials.

  • Bass is done moving from Root of the key jumping to the Fifth (e.g. F# =1 -> C# = 5)

  • Found a nice Arpeggiated Instrument, not sure how to extract the MIDI notes, I decided to bounce to new track and the convert melody to MIDI, good enough to let me reuse the cool notes with different instruments.

  • Decided to skip some of the sound design tuning using Meld instrument.
